The importance of alone time

The importance of being comfortable with being alone with your own thoughts

Too often, the experience of being left alone with our own thoughts turns out to be anything but relaxing. In fact, it can be anxiety producing. We feel fidgety and eager to get up and do something to drive the thoughts away. When we are still with our own thoughts and feelings, there is always the possibility that those thoughts and feelings will go to a place that we don’t like. It can also teach us that negative thoughts are just that — thoughts, not realities that we have to run from, fight or respond to.

Sitting with our thoughts and feelings can be tough.

It can feel unnatural. It can be downright painful. But it also helps us better understand ourselves and what we need. It forms the first step in building a meaningful life. And it’s something we can ease into. So often in our busy lives, we get into the habit of being on the go all the time, without allowing ourselves to take time out. By being alone, we give ourselves permission to slow down and reflect on what’s going on in our lives. It allows you to reflect and recharge. Your life is always moving at a crazy fast pace. So fast in fact, that it’s probably rare when you have a moment alone to sit and reflect on your life. And being alone does exactly that, gives you the perfect opportunity for a little self reflection. Since you aren’t spending so much time processing the thoughts and feelings of others, it’s the best time to turn your focus inwards. Solitude provides the perfect environment for reflection.

When you start to enjoy being alone, you’ll gain a greater perspective for your own emotions.

You’ll create a deeper understanding of what makes you happy, what upsets you, and what saddens you. With that knowledge, it’s then easier to regulate your emotions. But it all starts with understanding how you feel, and that comes from a little bit of solitude.

Inside us is a rich and beautiful universe

When you spend time alone on a regular basis, and eventually start to enjoy being alone, you’ll come to find that you also enjoy your relationships with other people even more.

The time spent alone gives you a greater appreciation for yourself. It also lets you appreciate all the great things that come from your relationships with other people, most of which you were oblivious to before.

By getting into the habit of being quiet, and doing it consistently, you’ll enjoy more clarity, more inspiration, better creativity and you’ll realize you can have fun by just allowing yourself to be alone with your thoughts.

Solitude provides the perfect environment for reflection

Your goal should be to increase your mindful living when you’re alone as well as when you’re with others. Inside us is a rich and beautiful universe. If we don’t take time to discover ourselves and look under the surface, we may miss the wonderful potential that exists inside each of us.
