Fill Your Cup!

Why it’s important to out YOU first


You can’t pour from an empty cup. Do you intentionally fill up your cup?


Life has changed. While we’re trying to make sense of an impossible situation, it’s easy to forget how important it is to take care of ourselves as well. Whether you’re taking care of employees, clients, and/or children you cannot pour from an empty cup.


As human beings, we all have basic needs that need to be met.


They’re different for all of us, but if our needs aren’t being satisfied, we end up feeling tired, unhappy and unfulfilled. We generally understand that if we are stressed out, overworked or exhausted, we don’t perform well. Yet we still struggle to take note of it and look after ourselves. It is essential – not selfish – that we first fill ourselves up in order to be more whole and better able to love, support, and care for those around us.


Start simple and work your way up. Then you’ll find yourself booming with blessings!

Denying yourself those small pleasures, whether by circumstance or because you stop allowing yourself to be important, can quickly add up to a pervasive feeling or dissatisfaction. Filling our own cup is so vital. And not finding the time for these small kindnesses to ourselves simply reinforces that feeling of not being significant.


A big part of filling your cup is redirecting your energy towards fostering a constructive mindset.


And releasing a destructive mindset. Instead of draining yourself by dwelling on the negative, you have the choice to reach a more energized and positive state of being. That trickles down to the rest of your life. It’s not that you’re ignoring the negative, either. With a grateful mindset, you become quicker to realize your true capabilities to deal with problems. And you begin to realize that those problems aren’t so bad when put into perspective.


Other ways to fill up your cup:


Practice gratitude: Practicing gratitude doesn’t have to be difficult. You can take five minutes during your morning walk to go over everything in your life that you’re grateful for in that moment. If you meditate or journal, use a session to meditate on your gratitude, or write about something great that happened recently. If you’re not sure what to be grateful for, start with something more general like “I have running water” or “I have a working car to get around”. Start simple and work your way up. Then you’ll find yourself booming with blessings!


Set boundaries: Without clear boundaries in life, you are vulnerable to burnout. Simply because you’re less likely to realize that you are being overextended. By taking the time to solidify your boundaries and stick to them, you demonstrate to others that you respect your time and space. And that they should too.


Taking time out for ourselves is not selfish, it's not ridiculous, it's not a waste of time.

A conversation: Reach out to an old friend or make a new one. Meet a pal for brunch and talk about what’s going on in your world. This is a great time to wrap your head around all the craziness stressing you out. It's also a time to immerse yourself in stimulating, unrelated conversation. Don’t discuss frustrations and fears. Rather, engage in discussion about your passions and interests.


Discover what you love: Hobbies are so important for sanity. Get out of the house for an art class, or learn a new skill. Try a new sport. Lighting your passion for something outside family and home life helps keep you engaged and refreshed.


Adjust your schedule: Finding it difficult to find time for yourself? Adjust your schedule. Get up earlier to take advantage of some quiet time alone, or set aside your lunch break to do something for yourself. Everyone gets the same number of hours in the day, it’s up to you to fit yourself in there somehow.


It is essential – not selfish – that we first fill ourselves up in order to be more whole and better able to love, support, and care for those around us.

Having a full cup means that we have made our physical, spiritual, and emotional needs a priority.


When our cup runneth over, we are well-rested, well-nourished and full of energy. We have taken the time to fulfill our emotional and spiritual needs.


Your cup is going to run low sometimes. That’s life. Pay attention to what makes you happy, what brings you peace, what leaves you feeling refreshed. Then do those things, because you care about yourself.


By taking the time to solidify your boundaries and stick to them, you demonstrate to others that you respect your time and space. And that they should too.

We are all only human, we are not robots.


We need to be able to have fun, do things that make us feel really alive but we also need time to rest, restore and renew. Taking time out for ourselves is not selfish, it's not ridiculous, it's not a waste of time. Creating precious space and time in our own daily lives for self-care. And for doing whatever it is that helps to fill our cups is one of the most responsible and rewarding things you can do for yourself and for those close to you. You will create a deeper awareness and connection to your soul and what it desires to feel truly alive.


You deserve a full cup. It’s as simple as that.
